Bhavatarini Devi (1877–1973) – Better known as “Basumati Ma”, wife of Upendranath Mukherjee, lay devotee of the Master and founder of the publishing house “Basumati Sahitya Mandir”. Born in a family of devotees, had been a favourite of the Master as a child and is said to have been fed rice at her “annaprashan” (first rice ceremony) by the Master who named her “Bhavatarini” and later arranged her marriage to Upendranath. After the marriage (1885) Upendranath began to prosper. She had enjoyed close association with the Master, the Holy Mother, Swamiji and other monks, recipient of rare grace from the Master, whom she worshipped as her “Ishta”. Widowed in 1919, spent her last years in Varanasi, a symbol of blazing renunciation, living alone near the Mission. Close association with the monks at the Sevashrama who directed devotees to her residence for darshan of a rare life of piety, austerities and renunciation, blessed by the Master’s grace.
