When Nistarini became bedridden, she could not bear the touch of any impure person. Monks were then sent from Belur Math to serve her. On 20 March 1932, Nistarini hugged the picture of Sri Ramakrishna, repeated his name, and in deep meditation slowly passed away. When news of her death reached Belur Math, Swami Shivananda said to the monks:
They are not just ordinary mortals; they are the companions of the Master. They come in every age with the avatar to play their respective parts in his divine drama. When the Holy Mother was in Vrindaban [1886-87], she went one day to attend the vesper service at the Radharaman temple. There she saw Nirode’s mother [Nistarini] fanning Lord Krishna with a chamara [yak’s tail]. Later the Holy Mother said to her women companions, “During the vesper I saw Navagopal Babu’s wife fanning the deity with a chamara.” Ah, what love and what devotion she had for the Master! She was, as it were, like one of the gopis [cowherd girls of Vrindaban]. Once her sons told her: “Mother, you talk so much about the Master; now look, how your Master has put us into straitened circumstances! Enough of it! Don’t talk too much about the Master anymore.” To this she replied: “What do you say? I love the Master. I have given my heart once for all to him. How foolishly you boys talk!”
They were bought with his love; they dedicated themselves at his feet. Ah! The more I think of her love for the Master, the more I feel a tickling sensation in my heart. Lust is self-centred and love is God-centred. Nirode’s mother once told somebody, “You may do all kinds of spiritual practices, but your real success lies in knowing how to die.” Well, she proved it in her life. Hugging the Master’s picture, and repeating his name, she has gone to the Master. (Source: They Lived with God)
