Manomohon sincerely tried to follow the teachings of Sri Ramakrishna. He used to cry to God profusely, but still he did not have a vision of God, nor did he receive peace of mind. Hearing of his mental agony, Sri Ramakrishna one day said to him: “Why are you so impatient? Everything happens in the course of time. It takes time for fruit to ripen or for an abscess to mature. Divert all of your attachments towards God and He will be revealed to you.”
Sri Ramakrishna was once invited to attend the festival of the Harisabha in Konnagar, Manomohan’s village, but since he could not go he sent Ram and Manomohan there. Ram gave a lecture entitled “What Is True Religion?” This was followed by devotional singing, which lasted until midnight. A large crowd sang and danced in an inspired mood, encircling Ram and Manomohan. Manomohan lost outward consciousness and did not regain it until the next day. Later Ram and Manomohan came to know that the Master had transmitted spiritual power to them.
On a certain festival day, Manomohan’s mother, Shyama Sundari, was about to lose body-consciousness while listening to the evening kirtan at Ram’s house. Immediately she called Manomohan to her and told him privately: “Listen, my son. Today during the festival I shall give up my body. I shall leave this world while listening to the Lord’s name. Please don’t tell this to anyone, and let there be no obstruction to the festival.” Manomohan bowed down to his mother and then rejoined the kirtan. In obedience to her last wishes he did not express to anyone the terrible grief he was feeling. Meanwhile Shyama Sundari passed away. Ram and a few neighbours heard the sad news when the festival was over.
There is a saying, “If a person wants God, God takes everything from him. And if that person continues to love Him. God becomes his slave.” Manomohan passed through ordeal after ordeal. Shortly after his mother passed away, one of his daughters also died. When one of his friends tried to console him, he replied: “Everything happens according to the Master’s will. What do we know about his will? He knows what is good for us. Bless me so that I may never go against his will.”
….. Manomohan’s family was a religious one and Sri Ramakrishna was its central figure. With the Master in his heart, Manomohan carried on all the duties of a householder. At first his wife, Adharmohini, had not approved of his close association with the Master, but eventually her attitude changed. During her worship she would pray to Sri Ramakrishna: “Master, I did not have an opportunity to receive initiation from you, but please do not give me up for that reason. Endow me with faith and devotion for you as my husband has. Give me strength so that I can be a true wife to him and a helper in his spiritual pursuit.” One day Manomohan overheard his wife’s prayer and saw her crying. It moved him greatly, and he felt the Master’s grace. He then realized the truth of Sri Ramakrishna’s teaching, that God makes everything favourable for a person who loves Him.
