Sometime before Sri Ramakrishna started to practise nondualistic Vedanta, his mother moved to Dakshineswar from Kamarpukur. Mathur had great regard for her and would call her “Grandma.” Mathur was very concerned about Sri Ramakrishna’s future. Earlier he had discussed the matter with Hriday and had decided to offer Sri Ramakrishna an estate. But as soon as the Master heard about it he became angry and rushed to hit Mathur, shouting, “Rascal, you want to make me a worldly man?” Since this plan did not work, Mathur devised another. He went to Chandramani, the Master’s mother, and begged her to ask of him anything she wanted. But the guileless elderly lady was perplexed. She said: “My son, you have already removed all my wants. I shall inform you if I need anything in the future. I have enough clothing, and you have provided plenty of food. So what else do I need?” When Mathur insisted, she thought awhile and said, “Well, if you really want to give me something, please buy me an anna [one sixteenth of a rupee — equivalent to less than one cent] worth of tobacco leaves. I want to make some tooth powder.” Mathur was moved to tears. He saluted her and remarked, “Who but such a mother could give birth to a son like Sri Ramakrishna?” (Source: They Lived with God)
