dyaurevargādityaḥ sāma tadetadetasyāmṛcyadhyūḍhaṃ sāma tasmādṛcyadhyūḍhaṃ sāma gīyate dyaureva sādityo’mastatsāma || 1.6.3 ||
3. Heaven is the Ṛk, and the sun is the Sāma. This Sāma [called the sun] is based on the Ṛk [called heaven]. This is why Sāma scholars sing songs based on the Ṛk. Heaven is sā, and the sun is ama. Together they are Sāma.
Word-for-word explanation:
Dyauḥ, the heaven; eva ṛk, is Ṛk; ādityaḥ sāma, the sun is Sāma; tat etat sāma, that Sāma [which is known as the sun]; etasyām ṛci adhyūḍham, is based on the Ṛk [heaven]; tasmāt, that is why; ṛci adhyūḍham sāma [sāmagaiḥ] gīyate, the Sāma scholars sing the Sāma based on the Ṛk; dyauḥ eva sā, heaven is nothing but sā; ādityaḥ amaḥ, the sun is ama; tat sāma, that [if joined together] is Sāma.
