Mylvaganam, hailing from a small village in Ampara, district of Eastern Sri Lanka, was a teacher who inspired by Swami Vivekananda’s message would visit slum children to teach them. He received mantra-diksha from swami Shivanandaji and joined the Order at Sri Ramakrishna Math, Mylapore, in 1922.
In pre-monastic life Pandit Mylvaganam, professor at St. Patrick’s College in Sri Lanka. Inspired by Swami Sharvananda. Founded Vivekananda Society at his own residence at Anaipanthy in Jaffna. Resigning from the post of Principal Manpay (?) Hindu College, joined the Order at Madras Math (1922) and was ordained into sannyasa by Swami Shivananda (19.4.1924). Given the charge of running five schools at Jaffna (1925). Entrusted (1926) with the administration of Vaideshwar School founded by Professor Nagamuthu of Jaffna Hindu College (1913) after it was handed over to the Ramakrishna Mission (1917). Assisted by Swami Avinashananda, ran all these institutions till the establishment of a Mission centre at Colombo. With the consent of the Mission served as Senior Professor of Tamil language and Director of Oriental Studies at the Annamalai University of Chidambaram (1931-33?). Later accepted the post of Professor of Tamil at Colombo University (1943). Served as Editor of the Vedanta Kesari, the Prabuddha Bharata and the Tamil journal Sri Ramakrishna Vijayam at different times. Translated some volumes of Swamiji’s Complete Works into Tamil. Author of Yoll Nool, a study of ancient Tamil songs. This dynamic life came to an end on 20.7.1947 at the age of 55, at Colombo Hospital (Udbodhan, 49.8.446).
He was a polyglot and was proficient in Tamil, Hindi, Bengali, Sinhala, Sanskrit, English, Latin and Greek; he translated many dramas from Latin and Greek into Tamil. He was associated with the setting-up of 26 schools in Sri Lanka, which however, were taken over by the government after his demise.
